San Marcos — The remains of the Amkon General Store on S. LBJ Drive have been a blackened eyesore for months now.
But local fire authorities have been mum about the blaze that destroyed the business and its contents on Jan. 10. State investigators say the investigation is still active, but won’t comment.
The building on S. LBJ at the railroad tracks was built in the 1920s and the fire that destroyed it came on a Sunday afternoon.
The San Marcos Fire Department issued an “all call” and received assistance from South Hays. New Braunfels firefighters also rushed to San Marcos to handle any other fire calls.
They managed to bring the flames under control within a couple of hours, with pumper trucks and firefighters stationed on all four sides of the building.
The flames were contained to the Amkon building; and propane tanks that were in the building never exploded.
A crowd grew at the scene as fire crews worked. Among those who watched the flames was the business’ owner Randy Marbach. He had owned the feed store for around 20 years and still has a second location on Ranch Road 12 at the Junction.
A day after the fire, investigators from the San Marcos Fire Marshal’s Office and the State Fire Marshal’s Office were on site collecting samples. At that time, Assistant Fire Marshal Bill Shroeder said it could take time for samples sent to labs to be analyzed and the results made public.
The San Marcos Fire Marshal’s Office says Assistant Marshal Gib Watt is heading up the Amkon investigation. He has not returned numerous phone calls over a course of more than three weeks.
