San Marcos —
For the 7th year, the San Marcos CISD's Child Development Center is hosting the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program for a two-week period, during which community leaders volunteer to read with the community's youngest children.
“It has been a highlight of our program for many years,” CDC Director Jennifer Vogel said. “Readers greet the toddlers and read for about 15 minutes with the children who range in age from two to five years.”
Mayor Daniel Guerrero kicked off the 2012 campaign, followed by San Marcos Police Chief Howard Williams, children's author Veronique Hahn and Assistant Fire Chief Len Nored – with several more scheduled readers this week and next.
The final event of the week will be the RIF book give away and party on March 2.
The RIF program is one of the CDC's Family Early Literacy Projects.
Hahn, also an artist, read her book “Zara and the Magical Slippers,” and donated six copies of the book for the toddler classes.
RIF is the largest children's literacy nonprofit organization in the United States.
Its mission is to motivate young readers by delivering free books and literacy resources to children and families who need them most.
According to the RIF website, “nearly two-thirds of low-income families in the U.S. own no books.”
