After a little more than three years at the helm of the San Marcos CISD, Superintendent Dr. Patty Shafer has announced her retirement.
Shafer presented a letter saying she would step down effective Dec. 31 to school board members at a special meeting on Monday. The news was shared with all district employees Tuesday morning.
“Dr. Shafer’s retirement letter was received by the Board with regret, but understanding for her many years of dedication to public education. She will be truly missed by the faculty, staff, students, and community members of SMCISD,” board President Kathy Hansen said. “Through her guidance and experience, she led our district to excellence as noted in our Recognized rating. Her commitment to our District is appreciated, and she is to be commended for her tireless efforts.”
In her letter, Shafer said she felt the “timing will be good for both the district and me. Upward progress is evident in the district, and the board will have four months to do a quality search for a leader to take that improvement forward. Systems are in place for this school year that can continue as the new leader learns about the district and staff members before planning begins for the next school year. On a personal level, I am at a point where I need to devote more time to my family.”
Shafer went on to say that she valued her time with San Marcos CISD, finding it to have been “tremendously rewarding, both professionally and personally.”
She thanked administrators and staff for their commitment to strong education and thanked the School Board for their leadership and support. She concluded by saying, “I also want to thank you for your faith and confidence in me as the administrative leader of your district.”
Hansen said the board authorized Shafer to initiate steps to start a search for a new superintendent. The search will be discussed at the board’s next regular meeting Sept. 20.
Shafer joined the district in spring 2007.
