Kyle taps resident to lead its parade

Kyle — The 2009 edition of Kyle's Fair and Music Festival's parade will be graced with one of its citizens serving as the event's grand marshal.

Mary Lou Whitaker-Wittenberg has lived in Kyle for more than 90 years. Her parents, Henry and Lillie Whitaker, moved there in 1891 and were one of Kyle's founding families. Her father was the town barber for 50 years, from 1910 - 1960.

She attended Kyle Elementary School, raised three daughters with her husband Wilbur, and has seen Kyle change from a small railroad community with many farms and ranches to one of Texas's fastest growing cities.

She will be driven in the parade by Chuck Nash, another long-time Kyle resident whose family had a large farm in Kyle until recently.

The parade will be Saturday at 10 a.m., and will begin at Gregg/Clarke park and proceed East on Center Street to the Kyle City Hall.

More than 50 entries are participating in this year's parade, featuring marching bands from local schools as well as other entries from area businesses and organizations.

After the parade, the public is invited to head over to the Kyle Fair and Music festival for free music featuring Cory Morrow, Jason Allen, Kyle Park, Ram Herrera, and others.

Other events that are part of the festival include a Genuine Poker Tournament, Kyle-O-Meter 5K Run, and BBQ Cook Off.

The festival also offers a new and improved KidZone, carnival, food booths, and much, much more. A complete list of events and schedule is available at www.kylefair.com.
