San Marcos — Potters at San Marcos Academy used their creativity to benefit the community by participating in the Empty Bowls Project in October.
After a humble beginning 19 years ago at one high school, the project has grown to include potters from all across the country who team with restaurants to raise millions of dollars to fight hunger.
Customers at the restaurants make a donation to a local food bank, and in return, they get to enjoy a serving of soup in a hand-made bowl that they can then take with them.
Students in Mrs. Ruth Schwartz's clay class at the academy made two ceramic bowls apiece to donate for the event.
One of the bowls was used in the Seguin Empty Bowls Project, sponsored by the Seguin Zonta Club.
Students took their other bowl to the Blue Goat Gourmet here in San Marcos Oct. 29, allowing them to meet the customers who made a donation and got to keep the bowl.
This was the second year the Academy has partnered with the Blue Goat Gourmet.
Through the students' efforts, $160 was raised for the San Marcos Area Food Bank and the Seguin Food Bank.
Participating students were Anthony Aguilar, Collin Cook, Justyn Hinson, Andrew McGregor, Hoang Phung, Caitlyn Scott, Marissa Sosa and Michael Young.
