San Marcos — The Texas Commission on Jail Standards gave notice to Hays County today that it will shut the county jail’s kitchen down, effective Nov. 20.
The Hays lockup has failed its last two state inspections, with the kitchen being one of the primary areas of concern.
Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Leroy Opiela said the notice followed a meeting between commission and jail personnel Thursday morning.
He said a two-week grace period was given at the request of Sheriff Tommy Ratliff, who “said it wasn’t practical to shut it down immediately.”
Opiela said plans are to bring in a mobile kitchen “and continue business as usual while they repair the one that’s here.”
One of the primary concerns surrounding the kitchen was mold in the walk-in freezers. Opiela said there are also some “foundation issues.”
