Chivalry is alive and well

Crockett campus earns ‘Best Early Act First Knight’ honors involved Rotary Club

The San Marcos Rotary clubs' Early Act First Knight (EAFK) program uses the codes of medieval knighthood to teach the students how to be positive influences in their school and community.

The pilot program last year at Crockett Elementary was so successful that it has now been expanded to Travis Elementary School.

The “Tournament of Champions,” held in late October, kicked off the EAFK program for 2009-2010.

Students from both the Travis and Crockett Elementary schools cheered for their champions, as they got a taste of what it was to be a noble knight. Classes were entertained by knights jousting in armor, as well as the other authentic medieval costumes used at the tournament.

The EAFK program is taught as another curriculum course: Students gather for 10 minutes to participate in a discussion or activity focusing on character building. They learn about knighthood and gain the understanding that there is a long process to become a knight.

At the end of each month, students are recognized by their teachers and have an accolade read about them by their teacher. The student then approaches a senior Knight where they kneel before them for their recognition.

Kindergarteners and first graders receive the title of “Page;” second and third graders receive the title of “Squire,” fourth graders earn the “Knight” title; and fifth graders receive the title of the “Order.”

This was the first year that Travis Elementary participated in the program.

“I hope that through the explicit teaching of values and virtues of good character that Travis students will learn how to make responsible choices in this very fast-paced, unpredictable world in which we live,” Travis Principal Niki Konecki said.

The San Marcos Rotary Club sponsored Crockett Elementary last year, and since the program was so well-received they agreed to also sponsor Travis Elementary this year.

This is Crockett's second year to participate in the program. At the first annual EAFK Conference held in Boerne, Crockett Elementary received recognition for being “The Best Early Act First Knight” program among 25 active programs throughout Texas and Oklahoma.

“We have seen a decrease in discipline referrals, a decrease in bus discipline referrals, and our kids are able to recite the 4-Way Test from memory,” Crockett Elementary Principal Rick LaBuhn said. “We have a more positive atmosphere on our campus and a greater sense of commitment to being good citizens. Our students are also recognizing the value of placing ‘service before self,’” LaBuhn said.

The Rotary Four-Way Test consists of evaluating things the students say or do to others. Before acting, students are asked to think if (1) it is the truth, if (2) it is fair to all concerned, (3) will it build good will and better friendships, and (4) will it be beneficial to all concerned. It is hoped that students will carry this teaching with them throughout school, at home, and in the community.

“EAFK is designed to educate the heart and teach those life lessons that are often left out due to a rigorous academic curriculum. It is a revolutionary, research-based character education program. Teachers find themselves competing with television, computers, video games, iPods, and much more. EAFK is a unique program that will reach and motivate the students at Travis Elementary,” Konecki said.

The EAFK program shows students that service to others is just as important and rewarding as working for oneself. Through lessons of “chivalry,” the program encourages Crockett and Travis students to stand up for what is right, just as the courtly and gallant knights of the medieval times.
