Republican Mark Jones says he will seek the GOP nomination for Hays County Commissioner, Precinct 2. The precinct includes the cities of Buda, Kyle, Mountain City, Hays, Niederwald and Uhland.
The current Precinct 2 commissioner is Democrat Jeff Barton.
Jones said he has gathered endorsements from a number of community leaders, former public officials and Precinct 2 residents.
“I am humbled to have so much support in our community,” Jones told supporters. “I am running for county commissioner to bring fiscal responsibility back to county government, make our roads safer and more efficient and strengthen our local economy.”
Jones is a two-term trustee and vice president of the Hays CISD School Board. During his time on the board, the district opened four new schools, with two more under construction.
“On the school board, I have worked hard to eliminate overcrowding, make long-term plans for the future and improve student performance. We did all of this without raising taxes. This is the kind of foresight and fiscal discipline we need on the commissioners court,” Jones said.
Before his election to the school board, Jones served on the board of directors for a regional water district. His background also includes serving as founding treasurer of Central Texas Life Care, a local non-profit organization that serves women dealing with crisis pregnancies.
“I have a proven record of fiscal discipline and accomplishment, and I am ready to bring conservative leadership back to our commissioners court. We must end the current cycle of tax increases and mismanagement, and work together to meet Hays County's future needs,” Jones said.
Jones is married to Kerri, his wife of 26 years. They have three children: Clayton, Kayla and McKenzie.
