Free Thanksgiving feast Friday

Many local residents are expected to take part in a free Thanksgiving feast Friday at the San Marcos Activity Center.

Southside Community Center will serve a full turkey dinner with all the fixings and desserts from 6 to 8 p.m.

The dinner is open to anybody in the community.

Guests will be treated to live music, including a mariachi band, and have a chance to win dozens of door prizes.

The Jigglebug Express train will give free rides to kids in the parking lot of the activity center.

Mayor Susan Narvaiz said the dinner is a San Marcos tradition.

"There is no greater service that can be offered than the care and feeding of one another,” she said. "This is one of the many services provided by Southside Community Center and San Marcos is blessed to have such servant leaders in our city.”

According to Southside’s Executive Director Ruben Garza, the dinner started as a way to ease the stress of local low-income families during the holiday season.

“Not everybody can afford to pull together an elaborate Thanksgiving meal,” Garza said. “We make it possible for families to celebrate together without worrying about the cost.”

Narvaiz said Southside fosters “an atmosphere of hope and concern for their fellow citizens” at the annual Thanksgiving dinner. Southside served about 1,500 people last year and they expect nearly 2,500 on Friday.

Southside Community Center is the oldest non-profit in San Marcos. It operates social assistance programs for citizens of Hays County.
