Maxwell — A man and his dog were shot by intruders near Maxwell early Sunday, but authorities have few clues as to their identity.
According to Sgt. Paul Cowan of the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy on patrol found the 35-year-old victim walking along FM 142 around 4:25 a.m.
He had been shot in the knee, and was transported to University Medical Center at Brackenridge in Austin.
Deputies went on to the crime scene, about a half mile away at 7085 Hwy 142 near Maxwell, and discovered the pit bull dog dead inside.
Cowan said the victim told investigators he was asleep when two men kicked in the front door, bound his hands with plastic ties and demanded to know where the cocaine was. He denied having the drug, and the suspects shot his dog.
They repeated their demand and he repeated his denial. After that, they shot him in the left knee.
The victim said the men searched his house and took his wallet, keys, cell phone and truck.
He said he crawled around his house until he found something to cut his hands free, then walked to a neighbor’s.
