‘Just for the Kids’ campaign recognizes Bowie and SMHS
Principals of Bowie Elementary and San Marcos High School learned late last week that their respective campuses had been recognized by the National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA) as part of the 2009 Just for the Kids Campaign for Higher Performing Schools in Texas.
Based on growth and college and career readiness (CCR), Bowie was selected for advancements in Math, and SMHS for growth in Social Studies.
Schools recognized for growth achieved better improvement rates for their students compared with other schools with similar demographics, and schools recognized for CCR are the top five percent of schools in the state, based on the percentage of students scoring at or above NCEA's College and Career Readiness Targets.
Principals Karen McGowan (Bowie) and Michelle Darling (SMHS) will attend a recognition ceremony on Jan. 19 in Austin at the James Bowie High School's Starlight Theater.
They will receive their awards from a distinguished Texas Legislator, hear from superintendents and principals of other higher performing schools, and share insights with researchers on their successful practices.
Keynote speakers for the January event will include Senator Florence Shapiro, Representative Rob Eissler, and Representative Diane Patrick. Following panel discussions, participants will learn more about NCEA research and resources to assist school systems. Superintendent Dr. Patty Shafer will attend with McGowan and Darling.
