Teen caught after chase

From staff reports

San Marcos — A 16-year-old Austin teenager is in the Hays County Juvenile Detention facility this weekend, charge with evading arrest and deadly conduct.

Police said the teen, who wasn’t identified because of his age, was taken into custody in New Braunfels after leading San Marcos police on a high speed chase down IH-35 Christmas night.

San Marcos Sergeant Dave Waugh said the episode began just after 9 p.m. on Friday when someone reported a black Hyundai four-door speeding in the south bound lanes.

Waugh said the vehicle came back as having been stolen in Williamson County.

Waugh said the chase was ended in the 3700 block of IH-35 South in New Braunfels when a San Marcos officer used a Pit technique to stop it.

In that technique, the officer comes up behind the speeding vehicle and uses the patrol car “to cause the vehicle to spin and stop.”

He said the maneuver, commonly called a pursuit and mobilization technique, was successful.

“The juvenile was taken into custody and the vehicle was towed pending its release to owner,” Waugh said.

He said Saturday morning that reports were incomplete and didi not indicate what speeds were achieved during the pursuit.

“But the vehicle was reported initially speeding so it would have been above 65 mph,” which is the posted speed in IH-35.
