Two San Marcos businessmen are peddling the high road in terms of doing what’s right.
That’s even though they could be out close to $200 for the privilege.
Alex Lincoln and Andy Howard, proprietors of The Hub bicycle shop at 119 E. Hopkins Street, had their suspicions but nonetheless handed over $150 for a bicycle worth $900 or so last week.
“The guy said he’d had it about four years and ridden it a little, and would take $175,” Lincoln said. But he doubted the story was true. “First off, it’s a women’s bike.”
Nonetheless, the bike “seemed to be in good condition” and even had a sticker from an Austin bike shop, Lincoln said. “So I called them up and had them run the serial number. Sure enough it had been stolen the night before. So I go back to the guy and offer him $150. He said he’d take it, and I called the cops.”
The suspect “hangs out for a little bit, a good 10 or 15 minutes,” Lincoln said, but eventually wandered off before police arrived.
“They got him on video at Jimmy John’s,” he said, referencing the sandwich shop next door.
Lincoln said the victim actually had two bicycles stolen from his garage and a different suspect came into the bike shop with the other one days later.
They paid $40 for it. Both are awaiting pickup by the rightful owner.
That owner had actually put out a reward on Craig’s List for the second bike, “but if we don’t get it back I’m not too worried. We’re getting the bike back to the right person and that’s really what’s most important,” Lincoln said.
