The Edwards Aquifer Authority is urging voluntary water conservation across the region in light of the arrival of hot, dry weather and the associated seasonal rise in demand on the Edwards Aquifer.
The goal, according to Authority officials, is to stabilize aquifer levels until adequate rain returns.
Although aquifer levels across the Edwards region have remained stable through much of the summer and remain above the trigger points for mandatory reductions in pumping, a recent shift to a dryer and hotter weather pattern has led to declining water levels.
Authority officials believe that voluntary conservation now could help to slow the rate of decline of water levels and avoid the need for mandatory restrictions, pending the return of rainfall to replenish the aquifer.
To conserve, the Authority recommends limiting outdoor watering to the coolest parts of the day — before 10 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
In addition, the Authority offers the following water-saving tips: use water-saving plants on your lawn; install water-saving showerheads or flow restrictors in your home; limit shower time to less than five minutes; check your toilets for leaks or drips; run only full loads of laundry and dishes; don’t run the hose continuously when washing your car or use a commercial car wash that recycles water; turn water off when brushing your teeth and fill a cup for rinsing; use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks; and only order water at restaurants when you absolutely want it,
