More than $1,000 in food and cash will benefit the Hays County Food Bank, thanks to the members of the National Junior Honor Society at San Marcos Academy.
NJHS members presented 60 pounds of food and a check for $1,000 to food bank representatives Kate Shaw, event coordinator, and Al Scott, operations assistant, on the Academy campus May 6.
“The NJHS Food Drive is going to help keep the shelves of the Hays County Food Bank well-stocked for quite a number of families in the days to come,” Pat Tessaro, Food Bank community relations coordinator, said.
The academy group began its food bank project in the spring by planning a schoolwide assembly program on the problem of hunger in Hays County. It invited Hays County Commissioner and food bank board member Will Conley to speak at the assembly about the needs of people in Hays County and how the SMA community could support these individuals by giving.
The NJHS members held a number of projects to raise money and collect non-perishable food items. They sponsored an informational booth about the project during Spring Parent Day and also carried out a "door-to-door" collection campaign on campus. Members then held a pie-in-the-face contest in April.
In addition to their food bank project, the NJHS also wrapped up another year-long project in May by donating 220 “Rescue Buddies” to the Hays County Sheriff's Office.
Crime Prevention Deputy Laurie Bain and Crime Prevention/Public Information Officer Mike Thielen were on hand May 6 to accept the stuffed animals, which are used by emergency service personnel to comfort victims in times of trauma.
During the fall semester, the NJHS donated more than 500 stuffed animals to the San Marcos, Blanco and Johnsonville Police Departments. They then continued to collect animals throughout the spring semester for the Hays County Sheriff's Office. This is the third year the club has sponsored the Rescue Buddies project.
Academy NJHS sponsor Keri Rhodes had high praise for the club members. “This group of 7th through 9th grade students has been a pure joy to work with this year,” Rhodes said.
