The San Marcos Area Recovery Team (SMART) spent Labor Day morning in Floresville, 30 miles south of San Antonio.
Divers recovered the body of a 23-year-old man from the San Antonio River near Floresville just after 10 a.m. He had been missing since around 5 p.m. Sunday.
The victim was identified as Manuel Williams of Stockdale.
SMART said Williams and a female companion had been walking along the river when both slipped on the steep muddy banks and fell into the water.
"Strong currents pushed them downstream where the woman was able to climb up onto a log jam and call for help," SMART diver Dan Misiaszek said.
"She was rescued by other patrons in the park who pulled her from the water. Williams was last seen struggling in the center of the river near the log jam," he continued.
Floresville police requested the SMART team's assistance. SMART arrived at the scene at 9 a.m. Monday and searched for 25 minutes before find the body in about nine feet of water tangled in tree debris 20 feet downstream from where he was last seen.
Floresville Police continue to investigate the incident.
"This is the fourth body SMART has recovered from area lakes and rivers this summer. A fifth person was rescued by the dive team and swiftwater rescue personnel at Cummings Dam on the San Marcos river," Misiaszek said.
SMART is a division of the South Hays Fire Department and relies grants and donations for funding.
