Diamond Line claims National Champ title

— Back-to-back state champions, the San Marcos High School Diamond Line can now also claim the title of National Grand Champions.

Members of the dance team competed in their first national competition this week at the Showtime National Drill Team Contest held at the Moody Gardens Convention Center in Galveston, bringing home several trophies, including the national title.

According to Diamond Line sponsor Michelle Knight, the team members have been working hard since June to reach this goal. After earning the grand champion award last year at the state level, Knight learned that the team had qualified for the national competition.

In Galveston, the Diamond Line performed nine numbers: four officer routines (jazz, novelty, lyrical and contemporary) and five team routines (pom, jazz, lyrical, novelty and modern). They were led by officers Brittany Natal (captain), Rachel Wheaton (first lieutenant), Justin Campos (senior officer) and Chelsea Casner (junior officer).

Knight said the team had adopted a slogan, “One Team, One Dream,” when it learned that it had qualified for nationals.

She said, “Every team member took the saying to heart, and it shines through everything that they do, especially when they step on the contest floor. We have practiced hundreds of hours refining skills and technique, polishing and perfecting every move. They represented San Marcos High School with poise, pride and integrity.”

The award winning ensembles and groups included:

• Diamond Line Dance Team for outstanding precision in all routines and the National Grand Champion title

• Diamond Line officers Brittany Natal, Justin Campos, Chelsea Casner, and Rachel Wheaton received the Showmanship Award for their Novelty routine and were also named National Grand Champions.

• The trio of Mallory Swinney, Larissa Ybarra, and Laureen Schweers earned First Place in the Ensemble category.

• Mallory Swinney, Larissa Ybarra, Chelsea Casner, and Justin Campos were finalists in the Solo competition.

• Maddison Stovall, Sharra Wilder, Sydney Huddleson, and Kelsea Smith were finalists in the Kick Master competition.

SMCISD Superintendent Dr. Patty Shafer said she had received a telephone call this week from a woman who had attended the weekend competition with another Texas team.

“Although she was from out-of-town and knew no one personally on the San Marcos team, she was so impressed with their behavior and sportsmanship that she felt compelled to call and compliment them,” Shafer said. The woman reported that she was particularly proud of how the Diamond Line cheered and rooted for the other teams who were performing in the competition.
