Emergency Guide addresses local concerns

— Just in time for the most potentially dangerous weather season, the county's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) has prepared and distributed a four-page Emergency Guide to assist families in preparing for the most likely disasters.

Created in cooperation with the county's Office of Emergency Management and Sheriff's Office, the Guide includes topics such as preparing an emergency supply kit, making a family emergency plan and considerations for making evacuation decisions based upon such locations as home, office, school, workplaces or in moving vehicles.

In addition to advice based upon probable Hays County considerations, links are also provided to national Homeland Security Web resources.

Another valuable resource contained in the guide is a list of  county and local non-emergency (non-911) phone numbers which is designed to be clipped and posted along with a family disaster “meet up” contact listing.

The Sheriff's Office’s “Neighborhood Watch” program is also featured as a proven means to improve neighborhood safety in all conditions.  An important part of the program is the development of e-mail and phone emergency notification systems.

The guide was initially distributed throughout the county as newspaper inserts.

Limited quantities are now also available at various county locations including Wimberley Community Center as well as the libraries in San Marcos, Dripping Springs, Kyle, Buda and Wimberley.

It is also available online to view or download through a link at the CERT Web site:  www.visitwimberley.com/cert, where more information is also available about CERT activities and membership.
