10 years ago 1999

• San Marcos firefighters pull a 44-year-old woman from the wreckage of her car at MLK and Guadalupe with the “Jaws of Life.”

• San Marcos City Council approves an across-the- board 15 percent water rate increase on second reading.

• The Hays County Grand Jury issues 32 indictments naming 27 individuals.

• The Southwest Texas women’s soccer team remains unbeaten in Southland Conference play after winning 3-2 over Nicholls State.

• San Marcan Mario R. Garcia participates in a “World Record Project,” named Hoover-Diana that will be the deepest platform drilling project in the world.

• Joanna Norris and her mare, Miss Peponita Rose, are named Grand Champions during the International Buckskin Horse Association World Show.

• San Marcos High School beats the San Antonio-Edison Bears 54-0.

• San Marcos Fire Department Capt. Bill Schroder and Engineer John Koenig extinguish a truck fire next to the Hays County Courthouse.



20 years ago 1989

• Sculptor Ken D. Little’s art is on exhibit at SWT until Sept. 14.

• Benjamin Castorano, an SWT student, accidently shoots himself in the chest with a spear gun while snorkeling with a friend in the vicinity of Aquarena Springs dam behind Clear Springs Apartments.

• The FAA approves a $1.25 million increase in a previously announced grant for the San Marcos Municipal Airport, allowing for the expansion of the airport to 42 additional acres along with the construction of several building.

• The San Marcos High School Class of 1949 holds a weekend reunion attended by 32 class members.

• The SWT Bobcats explode for four fourth quarter touchdowns coming from turnovers resulting in a 41-0 shutout of PraireView A&M.;

• The San Marcos dart team ends its season with 118 wins and 38 loses.

• Mrs. Merle Yarbrough is honored by the First Baptist Church upon the occasion of her retirement after 53 years of teaching the Fidelis Class.



50 years ago 1959

• Property owners along the route of RR 12, which is to be improved in a joint project of the city and the State Highway Department, meet with the city council to lodge a protest over the inclusion of additional right of way for the improved road.

• The City Council reappoints Dr. Wm. L. Moore as city health officer.

• Mrs. T.L. Davis is hostess to members of the Fidelis Class of The First Methodist Church Friday for a social in her home on Chestnut Street.

• Fifteen Safety Sallies are presented to San Marcos Police Chief Bill Allbright by Buttercrust Bread representative L. J. Schulte. The signs, that will be used to regulate traffic in local school zones, were requested by the police department.

• San Marcos Academy opens for the 51st year of instruction with 421 students.

• Rainfall this month has amounted to only .03 of an inch, according to official weather observer J. C. Metchalf.

• Mrs. Jack Gold, two year employee of the First National Bank as drive-in window teller, is entered as a candidate for “Miss Drive-in Teller of 1959” by the bank.

• After 10 days of football drills the SWT state College squad is pared down from more than 70 candidates to 45.

• Newcomer Miss Mildred Ralston comes to San Marcos as supervisor of the Southside Community Center.



75 years ago 1934

• Gene Scrutchin of Scrutchin Motor Company, local Chevrolet dealers, reports the sale of 33 new and used cars for the first 12 days of September, on this week’s outstanding prosperity note.

• L.A. Wright, who has been manager for the Southern Gas Utilities, Inc. at Robstown, arrived today to take Harry Presseur’s place as manager at San Marcos. Mr. Presseur goes to Beaumont where he is promoted to the position of sales manager.

• All government cattle purchases are ordered stopped in a telegram issued from George W. Barnes, assistant state drought director.

• Business Girls Club meets at Rio Vista Park.

• Palace Theatre is playing “Chained” with Joan Crawford and Clark Gable.

• Settles Furniture Co. is selling 4-piece reconditioned bedroom suites for $23 to $34.

• Coach O.W. Strahan flings wide the doors of Southwest Texas Teachers college gymnasium and admits 33 young huskies who will don the Maroon and Gold grid suits this year.

• Hays County sheep and goat raisers this week will have an opportunity to offer animals for sale to the government.

• Loans to borrowers from the First Federal Savings and Loan association of San Marcos at present and in process amount to $11,586, Harold G. Smith, secretary of the organization, says.

• Typewriters for rent or sale. Record-News. Phone 163.

• WANTED – Chickens, eggs, at highest market prices PIGGLY WIGGLY.

• Jean Fox, Reagan High School girl and daughter of Mrs. R.C. Mount of Lowell Road, is awarded the San Marcos Academy scholarship available for the first time this year to a Houston Girl Builder.

• Miss Virginia Pearce, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.P. Saunders of San Marcos, has had three water colors accepted and placed on exhibit in the Local Artists Exhibit at the Witte Memorial Museum in San Antonio, which opened Sunday for a month’s showing.

• Try those Dixie Cream Donuts made twice daily at Cooper’s Bakery.

• The Hays County Commissioners’ Court hears and accepts Miss Wilma Allen’s resignation as superintendent of county schools. Belle Schmidt to fill her term.



85 years ago 1924

• All stores and businesses will close at 4 p.m. in observance of National Defense Day.

• E.E. Barnes, city assessor and collector, has completed his tax rolls for the year 1924 and the tabulations show an increase in property valuations of $56,042. The total valuation of property in the city this year is $3,165,912.

• Street paving begins here today. Contractors ready to start biggest paving project San Marcos has ever seen.

• Order of Rainbow Girls installs its officers.

• Psychiatrist Dr. J.A. Newman, who came to San Marcos to study Mrs. Hauptrief, goes back to Detroit in the custody of City Detective Edward Bahlhorn, who arrived here with a warrant for his arrest on charges of forgery.

• Ellis Perry of Del Rio has been the guest of Jack Hays and Hugh Wiliamson. Jack Hays returned home with him for a 10-day visit

• W.A. Mayhall has sold his new home on West Hopkins Street to E. L. Edwards of Luling. Mr. Edwards is an oil operator and is moving his family here for school purposes. Mr. Mayhall expects to buy a lot and build himself a new home right away.



90 years ago 1919

• The twelfth session of the San Marcos Baptist Academy will soon begin.

• Mrs. J.S. Knox will entertain at the Elk’s Club Saturday afternoon.

• Two old buildings for sale. Must be moved from lot adjoining the Record office at once. Call on the Record to make best offer.

• Miss Marie Jencke, domestic science teacher in the San Marcos High School, returns from Warrensburg, Mo., and was ready to take her place at the opening of school Tuesday.

• Miss Doris Rogers gives a weekend party at Rogers River Resort.

• Lost – A Jersey bull; wandered from home about the middle of last week; about four years old; weighs about 800 pounds. Fine looking animal. Has spiked steel ring in nose. Please notify J.A. Lancaster San Marcos.

• Horton’s Shoe Shop – Ed Horton’s Shoe Shop turns out work on quick time. Everything done by electric machinery. Bring your work and receive it promptly. North side of Square.

• Chamber of Commerce holds a meeting and adopted its Constitution.
