10 years ago 1999

• City and county authorities capture three runaways from the San Marcos Treatment Center for the Brown Schools several hours after they bolted from the residential psychiatric facility.

• Forty-two indictments naming 32 individuals are issued by the Hays County Grand Jury.

• San Marcos resident Sherri Lewis is inducted into the newly installed chapter of the business honor society Delta Mu Delta at Hardin-Simmons University.

• Despite not scoring in the second half, Southwest Texas State holds off rival Sam Houston to win its final game of the year 20-14 at Bobcat Stadium.

• San Marcos Area Board of Realtors presents a check for $6,000 to Habitat for Humanity.

• Crockett Elementary school kindergarteners present “Salute to Poultry” at an evening program for parents.

• SMCISD trustees board hears proposal for three new campuses and renovations.

• San Marcos Police Officer Kathy Misiaszek is treated at CTMC after her patrol cruiser is involved in a three-car accident on southbound IH-35.



20 years ago 1989

• Marcus Cooper, a 6-foot 3 guard out of Dallas Richardson, signs a national letter of intent to play for Southwest Texas State next fall.

• The San Marcos Housing Authority was one of 75 public and Indian housing authorities honored this week by Housing and Urban Development Secretary Jack Kemp in Washington D.C.

• The San Marcos Police Department promotes three officers to corporal as a result of their scores on the most recent civil service examination.

• An SWT student, Jeffrey Duncan, whose mind “was somewhere else,” survives a collision with a train with only minor injuries.

• Pastor Tommy Jenkins celebrates his 20th anniversary at Grace Bible Church of San Marcos, which he founded in 1969.

• Southwest Texas State University football coach John O’Hara is dismissed following another losing season for the Bobcats.



50 years ago 1959

• Celestino Gonzales, local service station operator, is dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital after his car jumped a bridge curb and plunged into a gulley near the county line on the Seguin highway.

• Miss Emmie Craddock entertains the Xi Alpha Xi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi with a talk on “Contacts with European People” at its regular meeting.

• Mrs. L.F. Schockner is elected to head the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary at the organization’s second meeting.

• Sunset Lanes gives residents an opportunity to win one of 10 turkeys at this year’s Turkey Bowl, according to manager George Gilbert.

• Pecan nuts from all over Hays County will be on display at the City Park Recreation Building in the first annual Hays County Pecan Show.



75 years ago 1934

• The San Marcos High School football players are entertained with an oyster supper given by their fathers in the American Legion home.

• Dr. Charles T. Brown, well known San Marcos physician who for the past several months has been on active duty with the United States Army, returns home. He will be here permanently, planning to re-open his offices in the Cape Building within a just few days.

• The civil suit of J.R. Wilhelm vs. Chas. R. Ramsay for emoluments of office, etc., growing out of an election contest between the two over mayorship of San Marcos, is finally settled out of court for an agreed amount.

• Mrs. Henry Bales, with her husband as chauffeur and guide, is the first woman hunter, so far as is known, to bag a buck in Texas this year.

• Seven thousand turkeys paraded during Cuero’s Turkey Trot.



85 years ago 1924

• “That San Marcos is to have a million dollar cotton mill, is no longer a dream. Ground was actually broken Monday morning in making test holes to determine the depth to which the foundation will go. The building will house 10,000 spindles and 350 looms.”

• “It appears that the Newton Brothers and others connected with the daring mail robbery at Roundout, Ill., to which five of the gang have already confessed, are the same gang charged by indictment with the robbery of the State Bank & Trust Company here.”

• “A large new linotype machine is being installed this week in the Record plant. Just recently we added a new printing press, which is the finest built, the Miller-Craftsman unit.”

• The younger pupils of Mrs. Versula Ferguson’s music class give a recital at her home on West Hopkins Street.



90 years ago 1919

• “In the fastest game of the season, San Marcos Baptist Academy defeats the fast San Antonio Academy Monday afternoon, 20 to 6.”

• “Dean McElhannon announces that the school will spend the afternoon on the river.”

•“There is rumor of another large modern brick building for north Austin Street. It will be an assured fact if certain plans materialize.”

• “Dr. L.M. Rogers, returning from service overseas with U.S. Army Med Dept., opens offices over Franks Drug Store for the practice of medicine and surgery.”

• “We certainly have had some ideal weather this week. Will someone please knock on wood?”
