All-State Musicians: Whitbeck, Applewhite earn spots

San Marcos — San Marcos High School students Katy Whitbeck and Dwaylan Applewhite were selected for the All-State Choir, and Sam Heaton was named Second Alternate to the Men's All-State Choir.

Whitbeck made Second Chair, and Applewhite made Third Chair. Whitbeck also made SMHS history by being the first San Marcos choir student to make the Texas All State Choir for three years running.

Choral Director Helen Miers said, “I am very proud of these choir members and their dedication. It is a four month process, starting in the summer with choir camp preparation and the first audition in September. Over 15,000 choral students begin the process, and only 500 make it to the All-State choir. In our Area (four Regions), only the top four singers in each section are chosen.”

Whitbeck and Applewhite will perform with the Texas All-State Choir in San Antonio on Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center as part of the 2010 Texas Music Educators Association Convention.

High school students selected to perform in the All-State Concerts have competed through several levels of auditions to arrive at the state level. All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive. Whitbeck and Applewhite will participate in three days of rehearsals directed by nationally-recognized conductors during the TMEA clinic/convention.
