In celebration of their 60th Wedding Anniversary on June 17, 2010, Nelwyn and Jerry Moore are being honored today with an afternoon reception given by their children and grandchildren at the home of their daughter, Amy Meeks.
Nelwyn and Jerry, who met as students at Southwest Texas State University, have spent 54 years of their married life in San Marcos where they have raised their family and been actively involved in church and community affairs. They are honored to have each received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Texas State University, Jerry in 1976 and Nelwyn in 2005.
The couples’ romance began in the summer of 1947 when Nelwyn, as a freshman, enrolled in a swimming class taught by Jerry, a graduate student and returning WWII veteran. As one of two instructors teaching the course, Jerry offered to shoulder the burden of dividing the class into two groups. As each student identified themselves he assigned them to his class or the other class. Needless to say, Jerry’s roster included many beautiful young women with his future wife being among them.
Married three years later in 1950, they lived in the married student housing at the university which was located on the present site of Strahan Coliseum. This housing, converted WWII army barracks, was affectionately known by those who lived there as “Dog Patch”.
Upon graduation in 1951 both Nelwyn and Jerry taught school at Tivy High School in Kerrville Texas. Jerry, who later became the junior high school principal in Kerrville, then accepted the position of Superintendent of schools in Blanco, Texas where the couple moved in 1956.
The Moores returned to San Marcos in 1960 where Jerry became Academic Dean, and later Administrative Vice President, of the San Marcos Baptist Academy. In 1964 Jerry began his career as a life insurance agent and Nelwyn resumed her teaching career at SWTSU where she became a Professor of Family and Child Development and taught for 37 years.
Nelwyn and Jerry are quick to acknowledge that their most treasured achievement has been their family. They have two children, Jay Moore and Amy Meeks, and two grandchildren Madeleine and Max Meeks.
When asked the secret of their 60 year marriage they agreed that it requires two elements and stated it this way: “Love and commitment. Love without commitment is not enough.”
