KZSM — Want to become a DJ?

Sunday, December 16, 2018

Have you ever thought about becoming a DJ? We can make that happen! Your true community radio station and the San Marcos Public Library are partnering together to give members of our community an opportunity to explore the possibilities. With 168 hours per week to fill and only 52 hours of live programming, there are plenty of time slots still available. Despite the eclectic collection of offerings already on our schedule, there are still several genres of programs left to produce. These would include, among others, a dedicated country music program, a classical music program, maybe something along the lines of a bluegrass program, and a Spanish language program. We also encourage children and young teens to get involved and produce programs of their own.

To get started, join us on Tuesday, Dec. 18 from 6 – 8 p.m. for an orientation where one may learn about your community radio station followed by a question and answer session. Application forms will be available for those who wish to pursue this venture. In January, we will hold three two-hour sessions where instruction on policies and procedures, software programs, and hardware that we use in the studio will be covered. In order to proceed on to producing your own program, all three sessions in January must be attended. Please contact the library to register for these classes. There may be quizzes to asses progress and to determine areas that may need additional concentration. Take home assignments will be issued as well.

If becoming a radio host is not your thing, but you have ideas to share or time to spare and would like to get involved with your community radio family, then join us on Wednesday, Dec. 19 for our monthly volunteer staff meeting. Our meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at Wake the Dead Coffee House from 7:30 until 9 p.m. and are always open to the public. You can support your community radio station by volunteering and sharing your particular skill set. We also welcome individuals who need to perform community service hours and students requiring internships.

Don’t forget to join us in the Kissing Alley on Thursday Dec. 20. Ella Reid will be returning to play some songs from her newly released album and we will also have gospel singers to help celebrate the season.

Remember, this is YOUR true community radio station, come and be a part of it!
