Donald Dean Blevins
Donald Dean Blevins, 80, a loving husband, father and grandfather, and long-time resident of San Marcos, TX passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014. He was born May 9, 1933, in Johnson City, TN.
After graduating from Science Hill High School, Don left Tennessee and embarked on a 21-year career proudly served in the United States Air Force, retiring as a master sergeant. While in the military he obtained a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland; he later earned a Master’s degree in History from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State).
Upon final retirement from careers with the Veterans Administration and United States Postal Service, he continued with his lifelong love of writing, publishing his first book at the age of 67, and going on to publish five more. He was a regular at book fairs and market days throughout Texas, and he loved any opportunity – through media interviews or public speaking events – to share his phenomenal knowledge and deep love of Texas, its history, and its colorful people.
Don was preceded in death by his grandmother, Nettie Blevins; mother, Mildred Haire; sister, Roberta Johnson; wife, Jeanne Blevins; and second wife, Esther Jackson.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy Blevins; son, David Blevins; daughter, Donna Blevins (and spouse Elvia); son, Dennis Blevins; daughter-in-law, Terry Blevins (and husband Allan); step-son Greg Hardy (and wife Cindy Rae); four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to a hospice organization of your choice, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, or the Writers Guild of Texas.
Family will receive friends at 1 p.m. and Graveside Services, with military honors, will follow at 2 p.m., on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Memory Lawn Memorial Park in Martindale, Texas.
