James William “Bill” Stephens passed away May 5, 2008, in San Marcos at the age of 80.
He was born Sept. 21, 1927 in Austin to James E. and Julia Eugene Stephens.
After graduating from Hearne High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
In between terms of service he obtained a chemical engineering degree from the University of Texas.
Following his service in Korea, Bill enjoyed a long, successful career with the Dow Chemical company, focusing on the design, construction and operation of large capital projects in Freeport and Sao Paulo, Brazil, among other sites.
Bill was active in many social and service organizations. He was a long time member of the First United Methodist church in Lake Jackson and San Marcos. He was an Eagle Scout and served on the Bay Area Council of Boy Scouts for many years.
A private pilot since the age of 14, Bill also enjoyed sailing and motorcycles in his retirement. Until his final years, he was a happy, energetic man who enjoyed spending time with friends and family. We will miss his loving presence deeply.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda Jones Stephens.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn Stephens; his son and daughter-in-law Scott and Elizabeth Stephens of Wimberley; son and daughter-in-law John and Brenda Stephens of Crawford; daughter and son-in-law Ann and Neal Tinsley of Friendswood; son and daughter-in-law Jim and Tina Stephens of The Woodlands; step daughter Carol Ann Lee; step son David Stuart; grandchildren Benjamin, Emily, Mark, Lauren and Michael Stephens and Samuel Tinsley.
A graveside service for family and friends was to be held at Restwood Memorial Park in Lake Jackson at 2 p.m. today.
