Dorine Schmeltekopf Losh

Dorine Schmeltekopf Losh, 81, of Kyle, passed away in San Marcos Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008. Dorine was born on Dec. 1, 1926 outside of Kyle in her parents' home.

After obtaining a teachers certification from Southwest Texas State University (SWTSU) in 1945, Dorine taught elementary school and coached basketball in Sabine Pass. While there she met a hitch-hiking airman named Orval, whom she later married on Jan. 12 1948 in Phoenix, Ariz.

Dorine gave birth June 30, 1949, to Patricia Gayle Losh in San Antonio. Dorine moved her family to Arizona, Texas, Missouri and back to Texas while Orval transferred duty stations and they subsequently looked for civilian work, finally homesteading in Kyle.

Dorine worked at SWTSU as the head telephone operator until she retired 25 years later. On 1 Dec 1990, Dorine survived her daughter Patricia and took in her grandson Joshua. While raising Joshua, she provided homecare for Orval after he was diagnosed with cancer, which he battled until his death March 2, 1995.

Dorine was a strong matriarchal character. Her compassion, patience and personal endurance were second to none, which was evident in her devotion and caring of her parents, husband and grandson. She was fiercely devoted to serving her Lord and Savior through her work at Immanuel Baptist Church and the Women's Missionary Society.

Dorine is survived by her Grandson Joshua Allen Orr (Lochi) of Vandenberg AFB, Calif. and his daughters Ariel Marie and Audrey Grace. She is also survived by her twin sister Florine Welch of Sabine Pass; brother Calvin Schmeltekopf (Peggy) of Martindale; and sister Juliann Magdalena (Joe) of Harlingen. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by parents Henry and Annie Schmeltekopf and her brother Lawrence Schmeltekopf of Kyle.

Funeral services were held today at Immanuel Baptist Church in Kyle on and interment followed at Memory Lawn Memorial Park in Martindale.
