Kevin Todd Veidt

Kevin Todd Veidt

Kevin Todd Veidt

Kevin Todd Veidt, 57, died on January 5, 2022, after battling Stage 4 colorectal and peritoneal cancers for six and a half years. The son of newspaper journalist Jerri W. Martin and radio journalist Bill Veidt, and grandson of speech professor and radio pioneer Dr. Forrest L. Whan, Kevin led a varied and colorful life, which included working as the youngest radio station operator licensed by the FCC at KCNY in San Marcos, Texas, at the tender age of 7, where he enjoyed creating music playlists for multiple genres, issuing commentary, weather updates and emergency broadcasts, and watching in-studio performances and interviews with local and national bands. He had a wonderful tenor voice and won many awards and accolades as a young man. After choosing to drop out of San Marcos High School to seek his GED, Kevin went on to obtain a B.S. in Psychology and an M.A. in Professional Counseling from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State). In his twenties, Kevin managed three movie venues for Noret Theaters, including the Showplace in San Marcos and the historic Brauntex in New Braunfels, where he enjoyed putting on a memorable show, such as creating a submarine with working lights and sounds for The Hunt for Red October and a cultural performance by local Native Americans for the premiere of Dances With Wolves. After the sale of those theaters, Kevin worked at Gary Job Corps Center, first as a Residential Advisor and later as a Counselor. He was a zealous advocate, proud of the progress made by all of his “kids,” and loved helping them achieve their goals. Kevin’s work as an employee ended in 2009, when he fractured his spine and entered a long rehabilitation, but his “career” as a progressive activist and social media rabble-rouser blossomed. His voice demanding change and accountability will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Cynthia Veidt of Kyle, Texas; stepson, Scott Yarbrough of Austin, Texas; niece, Erin Rauch, her husband, Wes, and their children, Ethan and Natalie of Concord, NH; and sister-in-law, Julie Veidt of San Marcos, Texas, among others. He was predeceased by his brother, William (Bill) Forrest Veidt of San Marcos, Texas; father, William (Bill) Carl Veidt of Austin, Texas; and mother, Jerri Whan Martin, of San Marcos, Texas. Kevin’s wish was to be cremated; a memorial wake will be scheduled when pandemic conditions permit safer gatherings. In lieu of flowers or other memorials, please make donations to the American Cancer Society, Gilda’s Club/Cancer Support Community, or your local no-kill animal shelter.
