SAN ANTONIO — Three San Marcos High School athletes captured regional berths at last weekend’s Districts 25/26-5A Area Track and Field Championships held at San Antonio’s Heroes Stadium.
SMHS junior Nikki Sanchez won her third consecutive regional berth after placing second in the 800-meter run with a time of two minutes, 17.42 seconds. Sanchez will be shooting for her second straight state berth at this weekend’s Class 5A, Region IV Championships which will also be held at Heroes Stadium. New Braunfels’ Morgan Szeleky won the race with a time of 2:16.90.
Sophomore Madison Miles captured berths in two events after taking second in the long jump and third in the 100-meter dash. Miles, who went to regionals least year in the long jump, sailed 17 feet, 8.25 inches at the area meet, while clocking 12.82 seconds in the 100. MacArthur’s Sarea Alexander won the long jump with a distance of 17-9.5, while Judson’s Talajah Murrell (12.12) and Madison’s Yasmyn Richards (12.11) finished ahead of Miles in the 100.
Miles also took fifth in the high jump.
Rattler senior Frankie Torres grabbed a berth with a fourth-place finish in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:30.16, just a fraction behind San Antonio-Churchill’s Colton Stoker (4:30.09). New Braunfels’ Kade Kistner won the race with a time of 4:28.11.
Senior Cory Brown came extremely close to a regional spot after finishing fifth in the 400 at 50.35, just shy of Johnson’s Robert Ford’s fourth-place time of 50.27.
The Class 5A, Region IV meet is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Heroes Stadium.
