With the Independence Day just around the corner, it is time for area youngsters to get serious about their San Marcos SummerFest Children’s Parade and Patriotic Costume Contest attire.
The 33rd annual SummerFest will open at 6 p.m. July 4 at San Marcos Plaza Park. The patriotic costume contest and parade will start promptly at 7 p.m. The winners will be announced in a ceremony that begins at 7:20 p.m.
Children’s Parade registration and line-up will begin at 6:30 p.m. Costumed kids will be judged in “most patriotic” and “cutest” divisions with prizes awarded in each category and a “best overall” named. The costume competition has been growing steadily over the last several years, according to Children’s Parade chair Renae Hill.
SummerFest, a kid-friendly community-wide Independence Day celebration, will have live music scheduled throughout the evening, with David Ybarra headlining at 7:30 p.m. A variety of food vendors will be open for business at 6 p.m. The fireworks display will start at 9:30 p.m. and the festival grounds will close at 10 p.m.
SummerFest is made possible by a partnership between the city of San Marcos, the San Marcos Noon Lions Club, HEB and a host of corporations, organizations and individuals. Returning as co-chairs of the 33rd SummerFest are San Marcos Parks and Recreation’s Recreation Manager Lisa Morris and San Marcos Convention and Visitor Bureau Director Rebecca Ybarra-Ramirez.
Parking for SummerFest will be available at the Public Library, Activity Center and at the Texas State University Strahan Coliseum parking lot. The Lions Club’s tube rental at City Park will be open for business all day.
