Teams looking to move up from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision would be wise to follow the steps of Troy, formerly known as Troy State.
Prior to the Trojans’ move to the FBS in 2001, they had considerable success in Division II and at the FCS level. Troy won two Division II National Championships (1984, 1987) and claimed three Southland Conference championships during its six-year stay in the league.
Then the Trojans felt they outgrew the SLC and tried to fight as an FBS Independent. Respect and success were both hard to come by for Troy until it joined forces with the Sun Belt Conference in 2004.
