SMHS boys, girls cagers return to District 25-5A action

High School Basketball

Daily Record Sports

San Marcos The schedule isn’t making it easy on the San Marcos High basketball teams. After disheartening losses in their respective holiday tournments, the Rattlers come back to the court to face off against district foe Austin-Akins.

The San Marcos boys are coming off a 57-39 loss to Houston-Lamar that knocked them out of the Capital City Showdown. The Rattlers shot 27 percent for the game and are hoping to double that percentage in these upcoming games. This was the same San Marcos team that poured in 104 points two games earlier in the tournament.

Lauren Morales led the Rattlers in the Capital City Showdown, scoring 17 points in the monster win and leading the team with seven against the Redskins.

In order for San Marcos to be successful tonight and in the rest of district play, it will need a far more balanced scoring attack than it had against Lamar.

The Rattlers girl’s basketball team travels the Eagles’ nest to play Akins. The San Marcos girls lost a close game to Wimberley at the Wimberley Hoops Fest.

The Lady Texans used a late run to pull away from the Rattlers by seven points.

Both San Marcos and the Eagles sit near the bottom in the overall district standings, while each of the teams has played three district games. The Rattlers have failed to win one so far, as they are 0-3.

San Marcos has yet to find a true scoring option and it will need to develop one if they want to excel in district play. The Rattlers will look for senior leadership as they return from the holiday break to lead the team in the right direction.

Both the boy’s and girl’s basketball teams are facing a tough path with district play resuming immediately following the break. The road begins tonight with Akins up first.
