SMHS girls fall at Bastrop; Rebels lose at NB

High School Basketball

From staff reports

Bastrop 68, San Marcos girls 37

BASTROP — The San Marcos girl’s basketball team continues to be hampered by injuries, as the Lady Rattlers lost 68-37 against Bastrop on Friday night.

San Marcos held tight going into the break, only trailing by 10 at 31-21. But the Lady Bears turned it on in the third quarter, distancing themselves from the Lady Rattlers with a 23-4 run.

Bastrop guard Courtney Moore led all scorers with 23 points. San Marcos had no answer for the senior guard as she diced the Rattlers.

San Marcos was led by Jasmine Williams, who scored eight points, with Sadie Castillo adding seven. Ashley Crayton had six, while three other Lady Rattlers had four each.

New Braunfels 81, Hays boys 72

NEW BRAUNFELS — The Hays boy’s basketball team couldn’t find a way to slow down Will Henry. The New Braunfels’ guard poured in the points as the Unicorns downed the Rebels 81-72.

Henry scored a game-high 25 points to pace New Braunfels (8-12, 1-2). The guard was one of ten Unicorn players who added to the scoring column, as New Braunfels led from beginning to end.

Hays (11-10, 2-1) trailed 17-5 early in the game and they couldn’t manage to press the Unicorns into any mistakes.

Patrick Pena scored 16 points to lead the Rebels, followed by Ryan Hacker with 13, Vincent Sorrels with 11 and Michael Williams with eight.

Canyon 60, Lehman girls 44

NEW BRAUNFELS — A balanced scoring attack doomed the Lehman girl’s team against Canyon on Friday night. The Cougarettes had four players score a good chunk of points, leading to a 60-44 win.

The Lady Lobos (4-10, 1-4) fell behind early and even further in the second half. BriAnna Garza tried to keep Lehman close, scoring 11 points. Nicole Tharps had eight, while Channelle Williams added seven.

New Braunfels 43, Hays girls 39

BUDA — The Hays girls fell to 2-3 in District 26-4A with a 43-39 loss to the Lady Unicorns at Oran Bales Gymnasium.

The Lady Rebels are back in action Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. game at Del Valle.
