The San Marcos baseball team can’t catch a break these days. An unfortunately play in the bottom of the eighth doomed the visiting Rattlers, as they lost to Bastrop 8-7.
San Marcos fought back from a 6-3 deficit in the sixth inning. Blake Bagley, who started on the mound for the Rattlers, drove in two with a base hit to cut the lead to one.
John Henry Ybarra drove in the game-tying run and San Marcos seemed to have momentum on its side. The Rattlers ran a diversion play, with the man at first getting himself caught in a run-down, allowing the man on third base to break home. The play was run to perfection and Zach Cruz slid across home plate for a 7-6 lead.
It set the stage for the bottom of the eighth, where with the bases loaded, the Bears won the game by means of a lucky break.
“We need to find a way to finish ball games,” SMHS head coach Bryan Webb said. “A good winning streak will put us right in the middle of things.”
Llano 13, Wimberley 2
The Wimberley baseball team ran into a buzzsaw on Tuesday night. The Texans went up against a Llano team that was trying to put up some runs. Wimberley didn’t stand a chance, as the Yellow Jackets won 13-2 in the District 25-3A opener.
Llano put up five runs in the bottom of the first inning, and then scored eight in the third. The Texans were overpowered by the Yellow Jacket pitcher, who limited them with a barrage of pitches.
Wimberley scraped together two hits in the game and two runs. The Texans scored their two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make the game closer.
