State in 11th place at NCAA Central Regional

Austin — The Texas State women’s golf team posted a 12-over-par team score of 301 and finished the first round of the NCAA Central Regional Championship in 11th place at the University of Texas Golf Club.

The Bobcats are within one shot of moving among the Top 10 teams as LSU and North Carolina State ended the first day tied for ninth place with team scores of 300. Texas is in eighth place with a score of 299.

UCLA is the top-seeded team at the Central Regional and the Bruins are the team leader after firing a 5-under-par 283 as a team on the Par 72, 6301-yard course. TCU is in second place after the Horned Frogs finished the first round with a score of 285. Purdue is in third place at even par (288), while Denver is in fourth place with a score of 292 and Nebraska rounds out the top five teams with a first round score of 294.

Texas A&M stands in sixth place at 295 and Florida State is one shot ahead of Texas with a seventh-place score of 298. Texas State is one shot ahead of Notre Dame and three shots ahead of Alabama and Pepperdine. Kent State is in 15th place with a team score of 305, while East Tennessee State (307), Texas Tech (307), Washington (312), Illinois State (313), Harvard (314) and Fairleigh Dickinson round out the field.

UCLA’s Maria Jose Uribe is the individual leader after she fired a 7-under par score of 65. Uribe is one shot ahead of Purdue’s Maria Hernandez, who aced the par 3, 174-yard No. 2 hole. Valentine Derrey of TCU is in third place at -5, while North Carolina State’s Lauren Doughtie is in fourth place at -3. Florida State’s Whitney Brummett and Caroline Westrup, Coastal Carolina’s Aurka Felgueroso, Laura Jansone of East Tennessee State and Katie Kempter of Denver are tied for fifth place after they shot a 2-under par 70 in the opening round.

Texas State’s Caitlin Bliss and Linn Gustafsson are among a group of nine players tied for 30th place with a 2-over-par 74. Christine Brijalba is tied with seven other players for 39th place after she shot a 3-over-par 75, while Trine Mortensen finished the first day at 6-over-par and Sehee Kim finished at 10-over-par.

The tournament resumed with today’s second round and concludes on Saturday.

The top eight teams in the tournament advance to the 2008 NCAA Championship in Albuquerque, N.M. on May 20-23. In addition to the eight teams, the three top individuals not on the eight qualifying teams also advance.
