State’s Gustafsson moves up 19 spots at NCAA regional

AUSTIN — Texas State freshman Linn Gustafsson fired a 1-under-par 71 and moved up 19 spots to 11th place in the individual standings during the second round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship at the University of Texas Golf Course.

After opening the regional with a 2-over-par 74 on the par 72, 6301-yard course, Gustafsson entered Saturday’s third and final round with a 1-over-par 145.

The Bobcats fell five spots in the team standings, as Gustafsson was the only Texas State player to shoot under 8-over-par in the second round. Caitlin Bliss began the second round tied with Gustafsson for 30th place, but posted a score of 80 to finish the second day with a 36-hole score of 154. Christine Brijalba ended the day two shots back with a score of 156, while Trine Mortensen entered the third day with a score of 162. Sehee Kim posted a score of 199 entering Saturday’s final round.

Second-ranked UCLA entered the tournament as the top-seeded team, and the Bruins enter the final round with a six-shot lead over Purdue after UCLA ended the second round with an even par score of 576 as a team. Purdue had the second-lowest round on the second day with a team score of 294 after posting a team score of 288 in Thursday’s first round. TCU is three strokes behind the Boilermakers with a 585 team score (9-over par). Denver (590) and Texas (596) round out the top five schools in the team standings. The Longhorns hold a one shot advantage over Alabama and Texas A&M, and Nebraska (600) is in eighth place.

There are 21 teams and three individual golfers competing with the top eight teams and top two individuals not playing on the eight qualifying teams earning bids to compete at the 2008 NCAA Championship which takes place Tuesday-Friday, May 20-23 in Albuquerque, N.M. at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.
