Back on the Winning Track?

College Baseball

Daily Record Sports

Has Texas State regained its swagger after breaking its five-game losing streak with a sweep of McNeese State this weekend? After 37 runs in three games, the Bobcats would like to think so.

Texas State went into the series losers of nine of its last 10 games. The Bobcats won 8-2 in the first game and then walloped the Cowboys 26-4 on Saturday, raking out a school-record 27 hits. Texas State finished the sweep with a 3-1 win on Sunday as Zack Tritz picked up his ninth win.

Thomas Field broke out of a mini-slump on Saturday, as he went 4 for 6 with two home runs and five RBIs. Lance Loftin and Paul Goldschmidt should have played the slots after combining for seven hits, seven runs and seven RBIs.

This weekend, the Bobcat bullpen also did its job in holding back the opposing offense. Aaron Taylor only allowed two runs on Friday night and Tyler Brundridge successfully held a 22-run lead on Saturday.

Texas State will need its bullpen to pitch well tonight, as the team travels to Waco to play Baylor. The Bears trounced Texas State in its last game, winning 25-13. Baylor scored 16 runs after the fourth inning.

The Bears lost 2-of-3 games this weekend against Texas and hold a 28-22 record. Baylor holds a 32-11 record against the Bobcats at home.

Randall Linebaugh will start tonight against the Bobcats, as he’s one of the last options out of the Bears’ bullpen. Linebaugh holds a 6.83 ERA and his been ripped for 31 hits in 21 innings pitched.

If Texas State head coach Ty Harrington goes back to the old rotation, Kane Holbrooks or Zack Boles will get the start. If Harrington keeps his new way of thinking, the Bobcats could get a new arm on the mound to begin as Brian Borski started against Rice.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Ferrell Stadium.

Once tonight’s game is over, Texas State will turn its attention to Texas-San Antonio, in its last three-game regular-season conference series.
