Baylor hands Bobcats another midweek loss

College Baseball

Waco The Texas State pitching staff showed promise last night against Baylor. The Bobcats’ arms received praise after their team’s 7-2 loss at Ferrell Field.

Freshman pitcher Brian Borski started once again for Texas State (27-24) and pitched effectively through four innings. Borski was shutting out a high-powered Bear (29-22) offense and was mixing pitches well.

“He was really good,” Baylor third baseman Shanver Hansen said. “He mixed his pitches up really well, and he was about 50-50 with off-speed and fastball; and his change-up was really good.”

Borski took a 2-0 lead into the fifth after Aaron Fuller mashed a home run in the second inning. Fuller connected on a two-run shot, his second home run of the season.

The Bears got to Borski in the fifth, scoring two runs with one out. Hansen drove a single through the right side to notch two RBIs. A wild throw on the relay allowed another run to score and Borski was pulled for Aaron Taylor.

Taylor and Kane Holbrooks were able to keep Baylor off the scoreboard through 2 2/3 innings, but the Bobcat offense couldn’t muster anything against Randall Linebaugh. The senior pitcher struck out seven in six innings.

Josh Walter came in on the eighth inning and while usually a solid reliever, he was shaky in his outing. Walter allowed two runners to reach base and on his next pitch, Aaron Miller parked a three-run homer.

“He gave me the 3-0 swing away, and I thought he was going to give me the take, so I was pretty excited,” Miller said. “I was geared up for the fastball and I was waiting for something over the heart of the plate, and I got a good piece of it.”

After the sixth inning, the Bobcat offense struggled, only getting two hits in three innings against Craig Fritsch. Texas State struck out four times against Baylor’s freshman pitcher.

The Bobcats now wrap up their regular season conference schedule with a three-game series against Texas-San Antonio beginning Thursday. Texas State travels to the Roadrunners on Thursday before hosting the next two days.
