All Star Softball

Two from SMHS named to team

From staff reports

Two San Marcos High School softball players have been selected to play in the 2007 Howdy Honda All Star Softball game for graduating senior players in the Greater Austin area.

The game will be played at 7:30 p.m. June 13 at Westlake High School.

SMHS seniors Natalie Delgado (pitcher/first base) and Kara Trevino (outfielder) will play for the South All Stars team.

Delgado was a pivotal force for the Lady Rattlers on the mound and at the plate, helping guide the Lady Rattlers to the area round of the Class 5A softball playoffs. She collected 11 wins with 150 strikeouts, threw no hitters and two one-hitters, while collecting seven double-digit strikeout games. Her best showing was in the team’s district opener against Anderson, where she collected 17 strikeouts. She was a member of the varsity squad for all four years.

“Nat did an outstanding job for us all season long and was a big key for our success,” said SMHS head coach Cathy McBride. “I’m glad she is proper recognition.”

Trevino, who played two years for the varsity squad, hit .250 last season with 24 hits, 12 RBIs and scored 15 runs. She also had five doubles and three triples, but was also able to come through with the small-ball bunt when McBride ordered it.

“She was our squeeze person and she executed it perfectly five or six times,” McBride said “When you have someone who can hit for power and lay down a bunt, that’s definitely an advantage.”

This will mark the eight consecutive season for the game in which Senior players are nominated by their high school coaches and also selected by coaches’ voting. Teams are divided into North and South squads based on school location and play a nine-inning, open-substitution format.

“They made it a little tougher this year by taking only one nominee from each coach and letting all the other coaches vote in the rest,” McBride said. “For both girls, that’s a lot of respect from the coaches around the area and I think it makes it more meaningful.”

Tickets ($5 in advance; $7 at the gate) are available from participating players.
