Hanzel named Academic All-State

SM catcher makes grade on and off field

San Marcos There are high standards if you’re going to be a member of the San Marcos High baseball team.

Not only must you uphold the sterling tradition of the Rattler program, but also keep up with your school work. San Marcos head baseball coach Bryan Webb stresses both parts of being a student-athlete.

Those who excel in the classroom, will often find equal success on the field.

Under Webb’s direction, three Rattlers were recognized not only for their athletic ability, but their work in the classroom as well.

San Marcos senior catcher Corbin Hanzel was the latest to receive a high honor by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association. Hanzel was named Academic All-State for his performance during the 2009 season.

“The whole concept of being a Rattler is the buy-in on and off the field,” Webb said. “The work habits are equally important both places. Those guys who have gotten the Academic All-State award strive to be leaders both places.”

Hanzel started every game behind the plate in his senior season for San Marcos. He helped spearhead a solid pitching staff, led by soon-to-be-senior Blake Bagley.

Hanzel threw out countless base runners who attempted to steal on him and played his position defensively sound.

He demonstrated patience at the plate, drawing key walks and slapped big hits when needed. Hanzel delivered timely hits several times this season, including an RBI single against Elgin which helped break open the game.

“Corbin did everything we asked of him this year,” Webb said. “It didn’t matter what situation he was in, because I knew if he was out there, he’d try his best to make something happen.”

Hanzel joins Zach Cruz and Will Cody as the other two San Marcos players to receive the All-Academic honor. Cruz and Cody each earned the award last season.

Hanzel was the only player from District 17-4A to receive the recognition.

Seventy-eight athletes were honored by the THSBCA for their work in the classroom and on the diamond. Seguin High led all schools with four athletes honored, while Lake Travis and J.J. Pearse each had three.

He was ranked third overall in the senior class, as he carried a 3.97 grade-point average. Hanzel will attend Texas A&M next year.

“He was a monument for us as far as athletics and academics are concerned,” Webb said. “I have no doubt in my mind that he’s destined for bigger and better things in the future.”
