College Baseball: Another award for Sibley

Texas State freshman outfielder Tyler Sibley has been named a Second-Team Freshman All-American by Baseball America after helping the Bobcats win their first outright Southland Conference championship and earn a NCAA Tournament berth in 2009.

This marks the second time this season that Sibley has been selected as a Freshman All-American after he set a Texas State and Southland Conference single season record for most runs scored in a single season with 77.

He broke the old school record of 66 that was set by Thomas Field in 2008, while the previous SLC record was held by Ben Broussard of McNeese State in 1999.

A native of Frisco, Sibley also earned All-Southland Conference Second Team honors after finishing the 2009 campaign with a .367 batting average, 10 home runs and 38 RBI’s. He also hit for 13 doubles and stole 14 bases for the Bobcats.

Sibley is currently playing in Alaskan Summer League for the Anchorance Bucs.

He joined fellow teammates Bret Atwood, Garrett Carruth and Jason Martionson.

Sibley is batting .328 for the Bucs with five extra-base hits (three triples).

He’ll move to the infield next season and either play second base or shortstop.

Sibley has made five errors in 18 games for Anchorance, but word is the field is rough and ground balls don’t roll true.

Martinson’s committed 10 errors in 18 games, but has 53 assists. He’s posted a .891 fielding percentage.

Atwood is batting .346, while Carruth has struck out nine batters.
