Golf: Cock wrists for more power

John Ferguson

Having given thousands of golf lessons over the years to golfers of all abilities, one thing that works for everyone is to cock your wrist on your back swing for added power.

I will use the right handed golfer in the following example: The proper wrist cock is to form a 90-degree angle with your left arm and the shaft at the top of your back swing. Your left wrist should be cupped. Look up to the club over your head and you will see the club head pointing towards the target.

If you do not cup your wrist, but instead bow it out, then the club head will be pointing to your head.

Once you start your downswing with the improper form you will lose your power.

Additionally, make sure to keep a fairly straight left arm on your back swing. Now from the top of the back swing you should feel the left arm pull down, while your wrist are still cocked, creating the power in your swing. At the ball you should roll your right hand over your left, which is called the release, and follow through towards the target.

Always remember to take the club back slow and follow through fast.

Timing is everything in any athletic move — and golf is no exception. You need to start your down swing with your legs, arms and body moving towards the ball and target at the same time.

I will be more than happy to show you this move either on the range or in the pro shop next time out.

See you at the club.
