Bulls take control at Wimberley rodeo

By Randy Stevens
Sports Editor

Wimberley Final score: Bulls 16, Cowboys 0.

Thanks to the wet and muddy conditions at the Wimberley VFW Fourth of July Rodeo, the bulls were able to score a shutout after two days of competition, bucking off every contestant.

While the arena floor wasn’t as wet as the night before, the mud was sloppy and sticky, making it very tough for all the contestants in Friday night’s final as well.

“It’s tough to hang on when it’s wet and muddy like this,” said bull rider Rocky Johnson of Dallas. “It definitely works to the bull’s advantage.”

So with no bull rider eclipsing eight seconds, the prize money went to the bulls, so to speak. The rodeo’s stock company, Cadillac Ranch, was awarded the winnings.

The bulls declined comment when asked what they planned on doing with their share of the prize money.

While the bulls proved to be tough, the bare back and saddle bronc competitions were very competitive, with a number of cowboys scoring marks higher than the previous night when only two riders made it past eight seconds. Jake P. Brown of Hillsboro won the bare back event with a score of 81, while George Thomas placed second. In the saddle bronc, Tol Cawley’s Thursday night score of 74 was good enough to hold on for the win, while Roger Fawley of Cypress came through with a ride of 67 points on Friday for second place.

In the calf roping tiedown, it was John Klier’s Thursday night time of 11.17 which claimed top prize, while Cory Soloman of Prairie View claimed second place with a time of 12.78 seconds.

In the team roping, it was the duo of Caleb Mitchell and Cuatro Hindes coming through with the winning time of 5.33 seconds on Friday night, while Jaime Macias and Gary Sutton finished second with a time of 6.43 seconds.

In the steer wrestling event it was Doug Keeling’s Thursday night time of 5.33 seconds which held up for first place, while Rodney Brooks of Hockley placed second with a time of 5.6 seconds.

In the girls barrel racing event, Jordan Peterson came through with a top time of 17.112 seconds in slack competition earlier in the morning, while Liberty Hill’s Leanne Graham took second place with a time of 17.378 seconds in Friday night’s show.

Winning the girls breakaway was Highlands Ashley Guest, who turned in a time of 3.30 seconds Thursday night. Taking second was Hallie Short of Kountz.

Friday marked the final night of the rodeo competition, as the arena played host to the Professional Bull Riders Challenger Tour Saturday night. Read Tuesday’s Daily Record for complete results.
