Wood named Arizona League player of the year

Where are they now?

From staff reports

Former Texas State baseball player David Wood was honored last week as the Arizona League Player of the Year by the Kansas City Royals. The Royals Baseball Organization recognizes outstanding minor league players every year. Wood was among 17 minor leaguers, who were either recognized as Pitchers or Players of the Year.

“Royals ‘Futures Night’ is a chance for us to showcase players who will eventually be in uniforms, some sooner than later,” said Royals Vice President of Community Affairs and Publicity Toby Cook.

The minor leaguers attended a game during the Royals’ final home series with their family and were given a tour of Kauffman Stadium and the team’s clubhouse. They also attended batting practice, signed autographs and participated in the question and answer session with Royals Fans.

“I have been really busy, but I am loving every second of it,” Wood said. “I just have to keep working hard and hope for the best.”

Wood went into the Arizona League as an undrafted free agent but is quickly gaining the Royals’ attention. In addition to being the Arizona League Player of the Year, he was also a post-season Arizona League All-Star. Wood led the team with a .324 average and 39 RBIs. In 54 games played, he posted 69 hits and 17 doubles.

“It is a big honor to be here tonight,” Wood said. “This is my first time in Kansas City and it is a great city. Everyone here has been so friendly. I want to keep doing well and hope to one day be playing at Kauffman Stadium. It is really just a huge honor to be a part of all this.”

The Long Island, N.Y. native was in good company, being recognized with minor leaguers such as Billy Buckner, Mike Aviles, Dusty Hughes, Mike Stodolka, Rowdy Hardy, Jose Duarte, Mario Santiago, Joe Dickerson, Greg Holland, Clint Robinson, Anthony Bradley, Wilson Tucker, Matt Mitchell, Giancarlos De La Cruz and Angel Franco.
