It was another tough week for the JV Rattlers as they played against the Boerne-Champion Chargers Thursday evening.

With the Rattlers going thus far without a district win, they hoped to break free of their losing streak.

Unfortunately, the Chargers had other ideas as they won 30-6.

On the opening kickoff Boerne received the ball and quickly showed their intentions on a three-play touchdown drive.

The Rattlers returned the following kickoff to the 50-yard line, where they would attempt and answer Boerne’s first possession.

Blown coverage from the Boerne defense allowed Adrian Narvaiz to complete a 30-yard pass to Brandon Limon. Two plays later, CJ Gutierrez ran an outside sweep for a Rattler touchdown. Trying to even out the score, the Rattlers attempted a two-point conversion but where stopped at the line by the Boerne defense.

The Chargers took over in the second quarter and scored two touchdowns off long pass plays.

San Marcos started off with an offensive possession in the third quarter and couldn’t seem to find a rhythm.

The Rattlers were forced to punt and the wind played tricks on the ball.

Boerne took advantage of the field position given from the punt and seized the opportunity to score. Charger quarterback Blake Reynolds ran in a 20-yard keeper to up the score by six. The ensuing two-point conversion was unsuccessful.

The JV Rattler team struggled on both sides of the ball against the Chargers but never seemed to give up.

“We have a lot of inexperienced players and had to move everyone around,” San Marcos head coach Ronnie Robledo said. “But they are giving us all they’ve got, and that’s all we can ask for.”

The JV Rattler team hits the road Thursday night to play against the Seguin Matadors at 6:30 p.m.

Freshmen come up short at Boerne

BOERNE — What the San Marcos varsity football team couldn’t do, the freshman did.

The Rattlers’ freshman Purple team beat up Boerne Champion Thursday night to the tune of 42-14.

San Marcos scored on the first play of the game (a sweep by Zach Miles) and never looked back. The Rattlers held a 24-8 lead at halftime.

Miles wasn’t the only San Marcos player to score, as Cory Brown and Abraham Saldana each added two touchdowns as well. Preston Galvez also found pay dirt for the Rattlers.

San Marcos was led on defense by Colin Anderson and Charlie Mowen. Anderson nearly returned an interception for a touchdown in the second half.

Alvaro Gutierrez and JD Passarell put pressure on the Chargers’ quarterback throughout the game to keep the Champion attack off-balance.
