HS Foootball Roundup 11/1

From staff reports

Del Valle Hays knew what was on the line Friday night at Del Valle.

If the Rebels beat the Cardinals, they’d win their second consecutive District 17-4A championship. Del Valle, on the other hand, had waited 32 years since its last title.

It was anybody’s guess who’d win once the game went to overtime, but in the end, the Cardinals emerged with at least a share of the championship. Del Valle outlasted Hays, 27-21.

The Rebels fell behind early, but mounted a comeback in the third quarter.

Hays scored 14 points after halftime, thanks to a 1-yard run by Trace Gandy and an 8-yard touchdown pass from Sam Breyfogle to Kaimen Carpenter.

The Cardinals answered with a 71-yard scoring strike from Jozef Cortez to Davion Johnson to send the game into overtime.

Del Valle forced a fumble on the Rebels’ first overtime possession and won the game on Jovanni Valdez’s 1-yard touchdown run.

If Hays beats Lehman next week, it needs the Cardinals to lose to Elgin next week to split the district title.

Wimberley clinches a playoff spot

WIMBERLEY — If Wimberley wanted to clinch a playoff spot, it sure waited long enough against Llano.

The Texans were down 3-0 going into the third quarter, but broke it open soon after. Wimberley beat up the Yellowjackets and won 21-3.

Sophomore running back Dennis Smith led the Texans with two touchdowns. Smith rushed for 173 yards on 22 carries and broke a 65-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

Brooks Blakemore connected with his brother, Brennan, for the other Wimberley score. Blakemore passed for 73 yards in the game.
