High School Football: Wimberley wins District 8-3A title

Fredericksburg — If Wimberley wanted to win its first district championship in three seasons, the Texans were going to have their work cut out for themselves.

Wimberley fell behind by 21 points at halftime and faced an uphill climb.

The Texans wouldn’t be deterred, as they posted 35 points in the second half and clamped down on defense. Wimberley won the District 8-3A title with a 35-28 win at Fredericksburg.

Dennis Smith led the Texans with 101 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Smith’s first touchdown, a 7-yard run, put Wimberley on the board in the third quarter and his second (a 5-yard run) tied the game at 28.

The Texans’ defense came alive after being ravaged by the Billies in the first half, forcing three turnovers after halftime.

Wimberley returned two fumbles for touchdowns, as Colton Fonville jumped on top of the pigskin in the end zone and Clifford Hunter rumbled 54 yards for the game-clinching score with 4:42 left in the game.

The Texans finish the regular season 6-4 and advance to the Bi-District round of the Region I, Class 3A playoffs.
