Paddlers in the Texas Water Safari must conquer Rio Vista Park come Saturday. Many boats have been lost in the raging, man-made flumes.

Paddling: Organizers, racers get ready for 52nd running of Texas Water Safari

A week from now, racers in the Texas Water Safari will either have crossed the finish line near Seadrift or be bearing down on the coastal town — with little time to spare before the 100-hour deadline runs out.

Those 106 boats will be looking to complete the 52nd running of the safari — a 260-mile journey down the San Marcos and Guadalupe rivers to the San Antonio Bay.

Before the shotgun sounds at 9 a.m. Saturday to send the racers on their way, however, a lot of work is done by boaters and organizers alike to prepare for such an event.
