Bobcat Roundup for 3/10: Softball, tennis in action today

San Marcos — Bobcat softball tackles No. 22 Baylor

Texas State softball returns to Bobcat Field to host No. 22 Baylor tonight at 6 p.m. where the Bobcats will put their five-game win streak on the line versus the Bears. This will be the eighth straight year the two teams play each other.

Texas State (8-11) is led by freshman first baseman Haley Lemons, who leads the team with a .373 batting average. Lemons is on a six-game hitting streak and has tallied 19 hits and eight runs this season. Pitcher Chandler Hall is also performing well at the plate, batting .304, with 17 hits.

In the circle, Hall is 6-5 with an ERA of 3.08 and 91 strikeouts.

The Bears (16-6) are currently riding a seven-game winning streak after handing UT-San Antonio an 8-1 loss Tuesday night.

The pitching duo of Whitney Canion and Courtney Repka lead Baylor on the mound with a combined 13-6 record, while the Baers’ offense is led by Nicole Wesley, who is hitting. 467 with 21 hits and 15 runs scored.

The two teams last met in the 2009 NCAA Regional where Baylor beat Texas State 7-4 in a second-round game. The Bears lead the all-time series, 22-8, but Texas State has won two of the last three meetings.

Texas State will hit the road this weekend to continue conference play as the team travels to Lake Charles, La. to play McNeese State on March 13-14.



Bobcat tennis shows no love at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO — The Texas State women’s tennis team won its seventh straight match and improved to 4-0 in Southland Conference play with a 6-1 victory at Texas-San Antonio Tuesday at the UTSA Tennis Center.

The Bobcats won five of six singles matches and all three doubles contests to earn the victory.

Andrea Giraldo won the top singles match over Micaela Silva 6-1, 6-0 after teaming with Melissa Hadad to defeat Silva and Caroline Dedering 8-4 in the top doubles match. Hadad also won the number-two singles match over Dedering, 6-1, 6-4.  

Texas State’s Mariana Perez teamed with Gabriela Rojas to defeat Kavya Menon and Katie Ottenbreit won, 8-4 in the number two doubles match, while Texas State seniors Kiki Kruse and Nyssa Peele also won the final doubles pairing, 8-1 over Sarah Adams and Mariel Maffezzolli.

In the other singles matches, Perez defeated Adams 6-1, 6-4 in the number-four match, Kruse improved her record to 7-0 in singles play with a 7-6, 6-0 win in number-five bout and Peele defeated Ottenbreitt 6-2, 6-1 in the number six match.

Menon scored the only team point for UTSA as she edged Rojas 6-7, 6-3, 11-9 in the number three-singles match-up.

The Bobcat tennis team has two more matches this week beginnign with today’s home match against Penn State 11 a.m. Texas State returns to Southland Conference play on Saturday, at home against Texas-Arlington at 11 a.m.



Bobcat women golfers in 14th at UNLV Invitational

BOUOLDER CITY, Nev. — The Texas State women’s golf team fought through cold, wet weather to post a second-round score of 308 Tuesday afternoon at the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational at the Boulder City Country Club.

The Bobcats entered the final round of play this morning in 14th place.

“It snowed today during the round, which is something quite surprising,” said head Texas State head women’s golf coach Mike Akers. “I haven’t seen snow during competition since I coached in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.”

Caitlin Bliss worked through the weather to card the Bobcats’ lowest outing on the day with a 75. Bliss shot 79 in the opening round and will enter the Wednesday’s final 18-hole play at154 and tied for 56th.

Gabby de Reuck followed Bliss by shooting a 76 to card a 255 through two rounds and is tied in 62nd.

Puisite is also tied for 62nd shooting a 78 to pair with an opening-round 77 for a 155 total heading into the third round.

Katinka Dufour shot a 79 and sits tied in 67th.

The Bobcats; top individual is Valdis Jonsdottir, who shot a 79 Tuesda and is now tied in 13th-place at 146.

As a team, Texas State’s 608 is 33 strokes behind tournament-leader and host UNLV.



Men’s golf team moving up in Louisiana tourney

LAYFAYETTE, La. — The Texas State men’s golf team carded a 293 Tuesday afternoon moving up for a sixth-place finish at the 25th Annual Louisiana Classics hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette at the Oakbourne Country Club.

The Bobcats three-round score of 885 closed out the two-day tournament.

Texas State shot a pair of 296s on Monday to open play as the 293 allowed the Bobcats to finished tied with Alabama-Birmingham for sixth

LSU led the 15-team field with an 864, and the Tigers’ Andrew Loupe claimed the individual title with a five-under 208.

Michael Carnes led Texas State a 218 total. After opening with a 145 through two rounds, Carnes shot a 73 to finish tied for 15th.

Alastair Jones entered the final round with a 148 and shot a 74 (222) to finish tied for 28th.

Jeff Gerlich carded a 74, and finished with a 225 to place 42nd, while Andrew Bryant finished tied in 53rd after shooting 72,  the Bobcats’ best round of the day, for a 227 final total.

Philip Krebsbach finished tied in 59th after shooting an 81.

Texas State returns to the course March 29 at the Arkansas-Little Rock/First Tee Collegiate in Little Rock, Arkansas.
