High School Football: Bears getting ready for their first test

From staff reports

San Marcos — The San Marcos Academy Bears are tired of hitting each other and are ready to put the hit on the Crusaders of St. Andrews. The Bears worked on offensive and defensive schemes Wednesday in over 100-degree temperatures on Wednesday ready for their big day in Austin.

It will be the first game for SMA under first-year but long-time head coach Les Davis.

Heading into the scrimmage Davis said, “Our goal is to get everyone on film, I am not looking for specific things. This scrimmage is no more than a glorified practice for us. I just want to see all at full speed in Austin.”

However, the Crusaders made news of their own in the spring when they hired Ty Detmer.

Detmer is the 1990 Heisman Trophy winner from Brigham Young University and a 14-year NFL veteran. However, he may find the cupboard bare as he succeeds Don Cowan, whose team was 0-10 last season. This is Detmer’s first year as a Head Coach.

During light workouts before the scrimmage both senior quarterbacks Jonathan Powell and Aubrey Oswalt looked good at times. The team is expected to go through growing pains in the scrimmage learning an entire new spread offense moving from the Slot-T from last year.

The Bears were excited to see running back Ty Merriweather return from a slight sprain and have several good runs throughout the practice.

Defensively, Cameron Whitehead is expected to be the leader of the 4-3 and strong play by Sabas Castillo and Cody Watson was noted by the staff.

Davis closed the practice by telling his team, “Our goal this season is not just make the playoffs like season but to win and move on in the playoffs.”
