Busy running week draws to a close, Thankful Turkey 5K on horizon
San Marcos — There are some weeks when things in the running world are a little slow and then other weeks everything happens at once. This week is a little like that.
Last week the Red Ribbon 5K Run and Walk was held and another good turnout was on hand to take advantage of running right here in San Marcos. The best event is the kid’s 1K run to start the drug free celebration. David Alexander gave the instructions to the youngsters to try and catch the guy on the bike, which was once again my job at the race.
Youngsters usually have a tendency to sprint for about 100 yards and then realize that they have another 500 yards to go and they are winded. One young man was right behind me and I mentioned that he still had a distance to go and should try to pace himself. He set a nice easy and fast pace right behind me the entire distance.
Conrad Carbaugh, 10 years old, won the kids’ portion of the event by about 100 yards. Then later on he entered the 5K run also and took first place in the 19 and under age category in a time of 21:54.
Other local runners that entered the race included Kathryn Welch, the first place overall women’s champion in a time of 24:23.
Frankie Torres, age 11, finished second in the 19 and under age group, Michael Perez, a high school coach, finished first in the 20-29 age with a time of 21:17 and Travis True finished in 27:46 in that group. Julie Ashby ran a 32:26 in the 20 – 29 age along with Lindsay Whitaker in 51:18 and Tessi Nelson in 51:34 times. In the 30 – 39 age category Joe Merchant garnered first place with a 20:51 time, Rob Shivers took second in 22:15 and Steven Carbaugh had third in 22:32.
Tommy Machado had a 23:26 time and Travis Hunt came across in 29:29. Sara Torres took first for the women in that age with a 24:41, Bessie Hamilton gathered a second with a 26:34 and Melanie Weedman was third in 27:21. Jessica Diaz, a local physique champion, ran in at 27:47, Alyssa Adomaitis ran in at 27:48, and Dee Bartlett ran a 30:36.
In an unusual circumstance in a race like this there was only one male entrant in the 40-49 age and Fabian Basurto from Wimberley took first in 32:55.
That was not the case for the women in the 40-49 age as 15 ladies entered. Angie Burke took first in 25:26, Naomie Medina, the fitness leader that warmed the runners up prior to the race, took second in 30:31 and Janet Gooding from Buda was third in 31:11. Laura Mason ran a 32:54, Elma Minor ran in at 33:25, Brigitte Payne ran a 37:49, Kathi Jiral came across in 44:41, and Tracy Bandy ran a 44:42. Cindy Walden ran across in 48:58, Jalaayn Williams ran a 49:12, Peggy Winston, from Martindale, ran a 51:44 and Mary Mallet did 52:00 to round out that full age category.
In the 50 – 59 age Alan Atchison took home first place with a 21:34 time and Gary Pack had second in 49:28. Ann Conlee from Kyle took second in 32:08 and Telbi Crosby came across in third place with a 51:49. In the 60-69 age group Frank Payne finished in second with a 23:41 just behind Steve Vradenburg from Spring Branch in first with a 23:35. Lee Laszewski had third place with a 25:45, Ronnie Murphey ran a 32:35 time Albert Sierra got off his bike riding exercise to try running and came across in 39:52.
Another event to be part of includes the Annual Halloween Costume Fun Run on Tuesday night. Dress up and be part of the tricks and treaters that night of Halloween. Meet at the Courthouse at 6 p.m. and join a very fun and often silly group of runners along the popular trick or treats routes. Wear reflective clothes, bring a flashlight and be sure to wear a costume that is comfortable to run in. Call Laura Mason for details at 353-1789.
On Tuesday, Novv. 7, the San Marcos Runners Club meets at the San Marcos Activity Center at 6:30 p.m.Ros Hill, a noted artist in town and a certified National Endurance Sports Trainers Association personal trainer, will be the guest speaker. Ros will cover topics such as strength, toning, flexibility, weight loss, speed training and agility exercises. It should be an interesting topic for a large variety of people interested in fitness.
